As we were driving home from seeing "Music and Lyrics", Kim and I were discussing Hugh Grant. I off-handedly said that he'd make a good Bertie Wooster, if a Jeeves and Wooster movie were to be made. And Kim said, "But who could play Jeeves? This took a lot of thought. We'd tried to get away from Stephen Fry and think of other British actors. Couldn't think of any American actors. Didn't really want to try and picture an American actor in that very British role. When we couldn't nail anyone down, she suggested we think of those who wouldn't make a good Jeeves.

Personal opinion here, but I thought that Kenneth Branaugh, Timothy Dalton, Alan Rickman, and Pierce Brosnan would NOT make a good Jeeves. Just not the right fit.

Certainly NOT Anthony Hopkins. Not for lack of talent, but I think he'd be equated too much with his role of the butler Stevens in Remains of the Day.

We went down the list of Pythons, and the only one I could see as Jeeves was Graham Chapman. Unfortunately, that's not happening either.

Maybe Rowan Atkinson. He could pull it off, but no. There's got to be someone else.

Then I thought that maybe Hugh Grant could play Jeeves, with Tony Slattery as Bertie. That could work! But still not quite ideal.

So I present this to the theater masses: Aside from Stephen Fry, who could play Jeeves?

It's difficult to think beyond the knee-jerk "No one else could! Good god man are you insane?!" reaction to your question. Fry being so utterly perfect in every way. Lord, the man was actually sexy. Which is something for a gay man playing an uptight British valet.

I will throw out Rupert Everett. Not sure he has enough of a sense of humor, though.

I'd pay to see Christopher Guest as Jeeves. I'ts quite a stretch, since he is a Lord, but his movies have convinced me that he can do anything.
